Why the dust lands again on the surface you just cleaned
Once the rubble is gone, what remains is a particle you can barely see. A large share of the dust from cement, plaster and tile cutting measures only a few microns across — roughly a tenth of the width of a human hair. Particles that small stay suspended in still air for hours. A door opening or someone walking through the room is enough to send them back up.
So while you are wiping the worktop, the air above it is still unloading. The surface you thought was finished is coated again within a few hours. That is why post-construction cleaning is staged work rather than a single push. On site we normally run two full passes: the first takes everything from ceiling to floor, then the space is left to settle, and the second collects what came down. A final wipe done straight after the first pass is usually wasted effort.
A household vacuum does not collect fine dust — it recirculates it
Most domestic vacuums rely on a paper bag and a foam filter in front of the motor. That is fine for hair, sand and crumbs. Cement dust a few microns wide passes straight through the bag, travels through the motor and leaves again through the exhaust port. Worse, that exhaust stream lifts settled dust off the floor, which is exactly why the room feels dustier the longer you vacuum.
With fine dust, the filter class is what decides the outcome. An H13 HEPA filter captures 99.95% of particles at the hardest-to-catch size, around 0.3 microns, so the air returns to the room cleaned. Construction dust also shortens a household machine's life: the filter cakes quickly, suction drops and the motor runs hot. The tool for this job is a wet-and-dry industrial vacuum with a HEPA filter — some models pulse-clean the filter while running, so suction stays constant. Swapping the collection bag before it is completely full keeps the airflow up as well.
Dry first, damp second — and why the order matters
Put a wet cloth on fine cement dust and you will not lift it; you will turn it into slurry and spread it. Cement rehydrates, and once it dries it leaves a dull grey film on glass, tiles and taps that ordinary wiping will not remove. Hence the rule: pick it up dry, then wipe damp. For the dry stage use a dry microfibre cloth or the brush head of a HEPA vacuum — a feather duster only puts the dust back in the air. Fold the cloth into quarters and use each face once, so the dust you collected does not go straight back onto the next surface.
During the damp stage, change the cloth and the water often. The moment the bucket clouds over, the cloth stops carrying dust and starts redistributing it; a two-bucket system, one for clean solution and one for rinsing, is what prevents that. Cement dust is alkaline, so ordinary detergent struggles with the remaining film and a dedicated cement-residue remover works better. Never use an acidic product on marble, travertine or other natural stone — it etches the surface permanently. If you are unsure, test on a hidden corner first.
The places nobody checks: behind radiators, vents and socket boxes
Dust travels with air movement, so it piles up precisely where nobody looks. The dust packed between radiator fins and in the gap behind the panel comes back into the room the first time the heating fires up, along with that familiar scorched smell. Work the fins top to bottom with a long radiator brush, lay a damp towel underneath to catch what falls, then lift the rest with the crevice tool. The same logic applies to shutter boxes, door frames and the tops of wardrobes.
Ventilation grilles and the indoor air-conditioning unit deserve their own note. If the AC ran during the works, dust has been pulled into the filter and onto the blades; switch it on before removing and washing the filter and you are blowing that dust into the room yourself. In socket and switch boxes, plaster dust collects behind the faceplate. The only correct approach is to kill the circuit at the consumer unit and work with a dry brush and the vacuum — no liquid sprayed inside, and removing faceplates is electrical work, so leave it alone if it is not your trade.
Common mistakes that stretch the job out
The most common one is starting by sweeping the floor with a broom. Sweeping lifts fine dust off the floor and hands it to the air; half an hour later it is sitting on the worktop you just wiped. The second is blowing dust away — a compressor, blower or hairdryer aimed behind a radiator does not remove anything, it just relocates it. The third is wiping glass while it is still dusty: grit and cement particles act like sandpaper under the cloth and leave permanent scratches. New flooring carries the same risk — walk on it before it has been vacuumed and the grit under your shoes will score the laminate.
Another mistake is throwing every window open to speed things up. Cross-ventilation lifts the dust that was finally settling and drags the job out; letting it come down first, then working with airflow in one direction, is faster. Take the same patience with paint and silicone residue. Instead of picking at it with a fingernail or a metal knife, wet the surface and use a plastic scraper or a glass blade at a shallow angle — and check the manufacturer's guidance before taking a blade to coated glass.
How far can you take this yourself?
The dust from a small job — repainting one room, swapping kitchen units — is well within reach of a patient homeowner. Hiring a HEPA vacuum, working strictly top to bottom and running two passes a few days apart usually covers it. Wear a mask and eye protection even on a small job, because this dust is dry, sharp and alkaline. It gets harder after major work: fresh screed, opened-up walls, tiles cut indoors. At that point the dust load is beyond what domestic equipment can handle, and paint on glass, grout haze and silicone residue need the right solvent and the right tool.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a post-construction clean take?
The type and volume of dust matters far more than the square metres. One day is often enough after repainting a single room, while a flat with new screed or opened-up walls needs two passes. Because airborne dust has to settle between those passes, the work rarely fits into one day.
Why does a thin film keep forming after the cleaning is done?
The dust is usually coming from a reservoir nobody cleaned: the AC filter, a ventilation grille, the space behind a radiator, the top of a wardrobe or a shutter box. The first time those run or get disturbed, the dust is released into the room. Any final wipe done before dealing with them will not hold for more than a few days.
Can I use my own household vacuum for this dust?
We would not recommend it. Fine cement dust passes through a standard bag and foam filter and comes back out of the motor exhaust, so the job drags on and the machine suffers. Hiring a wet-and-dry vacuum with a HEPA filter is the sensible option here.
How do you get paint and cement marks off glass?
Wet the surface generously first and never scrape dry glass. Lift paint and silicone with a plastic scraper or a glass blade held at a shallow angle, making sure no grit is trapped under it. Cement haze needs a product formulated for alkaline residue, and that product must be kept away from natural stone sills and marble worktops.
How can I stop dust spreading through the house during the works?
Seal the doorway of the working room with a plastic sheet, lay a damp towel along the threshold and tape over ventilation grilles temporarily. Keep the air conditioning off for the duration, since it pulls dust onto the filter and blades. Cutting tiles and plasterboard on the balcony or outdoors, where possible, removes half the cleaning before it starts.
